This isn't a corporate golf site. It's a 27-year-old argument that never closed.
The Golf Lounges Forum is the internet's longest-running no-corporate-spin hangout for golfers. It is not owned by a club manufacturer, a tour, or a media conglomerate. It is run by 41 volunteer scratch golfers and funded by a $24 lifetime membership fee. If you've ever wanted to argue a 6-footer with strangers at 1 a.m., you're reading about the right place.
How a late-night argument in St Andrews turned into the oldest independent golf forum on the web.
It started, as most of the worst ideas in golf do, with a single disagreement about a 6-iron. Seven American undergraduates on an exchange term at the University of St Andrews had spent three hours in a damp dormitory arguing about who actually flushed a 6-iron the purest. By 2 a.m. someone had dragged a desktop tower into the room, registered a domain, and posted the first thread: "Was that a flush, or did we all just see what we wanted to see?"
Twenty-seven years later, that thread has 2,140 replies and the site has 1.2 million registered members across 92 countries. The seven founders never sold the community, never took venture money, and never signed an exclusivity deal with a club OEM. They wrote, in the original bylaws still pinned to the staff lounge: "No corporate spin. No licensed-pro advice. Just golfers, arguing."
Two of the seven still moderate the WITB board under the same usernames they registered in 1998. The other five rotate in for the annual founders' round at Kingsbarns, where the only rule is you don't talk about the Masters Pool until the back nine.

Scale you can verify, not scale a pitch deck invented. These figures update quarterly and are drawn directly from server logs and the moderation console.
- 76 specialized sub-forums

- $68,000 2024 Masters Pool prize purse
- 6,800 paid Masters Pool entries in 2024
- 2022 Best Niche Online Community — Community Roundtable Awards
- 0 third-party ad trackers, since 2016
Forty-one volunteer scratch golfers, no corporate spin, and what we will and won't enforce.
The moderation team is the largest of any golf forum in the world. Every moderator is a scratch or plus-handicap golfer, holds an LPA (Level Playing Ability) certification, and volunteers their time. None of them are paid, none of them work for a club OEM, and none of them will give you medical or swing-injury advice — that belongs to a licensed professional, not a peer forum.
What we enforce, without warning
- No OEM shilling. If a poster is affiliated with a manufacturer and doesn't disclose it, the post is pulled and the account is flagged.
- No personal attacks on named members. Argue the swing. Don't argue the person.
- No fake handicap claims. The WITB board is the only place a verifiable handicap is required for certain threads; lying about it gets you bounced.
- No drive-by course reviews. Every entry in the Course Reviews database has photo proof of the check-in.
What we will not do
- We will not give swing-injury or medical advice. Thread will be closed and a redirect posted to a licensed professional.
- We will not act as a club-fitting concierge. The community shares peer experience. Paid fittings are a vendor's job.
- We will not promote any one ball, shaft, or swing method. The 76 sub-forums exist so the argument has a place.
- We will not sell your data. There is no data to sell — see the funding model below.
The 41 moderators rotate a 24-hour on-call shift. The current on-call handle is posted at the top of every forum index. If you think a moderation decision was wrong, the appeals thread is open in the Town Hall sub-forum and is read by the full team within 48 hours.
Why there are no ad trackers, what a $24 lifetime membership actually buys, and how the community voted to keep it that way in 2016.
The forum runs on two revenue streams and exactly two revenue streams. There is no third.
- The $24 lifetime membership. One payment, no renewals, no upsells. It unlocks the private WITB (What's In The Bag) sub-forum, the Masters Pool entry, and the no-ads badge. It is the only paid tier on the site.
- The Golf Lounges Pro Shop affiliate. A small affiliate commission when members purchase gear through the Pro Shop link in the sidebar. The Pro Shop is curated by two of the founding members; nothing is listed that they themselves wouldn't game.
That is the entire business. There are no display ads, no retargeting pixels, no "sponsored content" units, no newsletter-for-data swaps, and no analytics scripts that follow you off-site. In a 2016 member referendum — the third in the site's history — the community voted 11,402 to 1,847 to keep it that way. The vote is archived in the Town Hall sub-forum and has been re-affirmed every two years since.
For comparison: a typical ad-supported golf publisher runs 18–40 third-party trackers per page load. The Golf Lounges Forum runs zero. That is not a marketing claim — it is verifiable in any browser's network panel.

"The closest thing the golf internet has to a town square — and unlike most town squares, it has actually been standing since 1998."
"Their course reviews database is the rare one where you'd actually trust the handicap next to the name. Photo proof of check-in is not optional."
"A 41-person volunteer moderator squad made entirely of scratch golfers is, frankly, a level of community infrastructure we didn't know was possible on the open web."
